Help for Dogs With Separation Anxiety
Does your dog fall apart when you leave the house? You're not alone, and neither are they — well, actually, that's kind of the problem. Let's skip the theories on why it happens and get straight to what helps.
First things first: it's not bad behavior.
Separation anxiety is panic, not defiance. Yelling or punishing your dog for it won't fix anything — it usually makes things worse. The howling, the chewed-up couch cushion, the accidents on the rug, the pacing, even trying to escape out a window? That's fear talking, not a dog being "bad."
Step one: check with your vet.
If this is new behavior, rule out a medical cause first. Your vet can also tell you if your dog's breed is more prone to it, and give you tips built for your specific pup. If it gets to a point where medication makes sense, your vet can help you figure that out too.
Before medication, try these first.
Crate training. A lot of dogs feel safer in a crate than roaming a big empty house. It gives them a routine and a "safe spot" instead of a stage for destruction.
Background noise. Leave the radio on, or put on Dog TV. Some dogs relax faster with a little sound in the house.
Boredom busters. A peanut-butter-stuffed Kong, a lick mat, or a puzzle toy keeps their brain busy instead of your shoes.
A goodbye routine. Same cue, every time you leave — a specific treat, a quick "be a good boy, see you soon." Dogs love predictability. Once they learn the pattern, "you're leaving" turns into "treat time," not "panic time."
And then there's us.
Sometimes the best fix is making sure your dog isn't actually alone as much. That's where The Woof Pack Tulsa comes in.
A drop-in visit or a midday walk breaks up the long stretch of alone time with exercise, a potty break, and some attention from a familiar face. It's not a total fix for severe anxiety, but for a lot of dogs, it's exactly the structure they need to relax.
We're Tulsa-owned, we hire employees (not random contractors), and we genuinely love your dog almost as much as you do. Check out our reviews, follow us on social, or reach out to talk through a routine that works for your pup.
